Children are always keen to learn something new, and our science scheme of work aims to harness this energy. Such natural curiosity can, through focused teaching, be developed into a scientific way of thinking that can help the children approach problems in all areas of the curriculum with confidence.
Our Science National Curriculum covers work on Life Processes and Living Things, Materials and their Properties and Physical Processes and the investigative skills needed to study these areas. We use QCA learning objectives to ensure a steady progression for pupils throughout their time at school.
At Wimborne St Giles CE VA First School we aim to inspire the children to ask their own questions. Teachers use demonstrations and real life examples to stimulate investigation as a class, in groups or as individuals. Children are expected to discuss, predict, plan, observe, report and explain activities and results.
We aim to make the most of the many links Science has with other topics as this helps to make the subject more meaningful for the children. We make strong links with ICT, Design and Technology, Maths, Literacy and many other subjects throughout the year, and at times use Science as the central theme for a few weeks study.
Through our science lessons children are encouraged to explore and work in our spacious grounds on a variety of investigative activities.
